RECAP UNIVERSITY ELECTIONS 2026

This year's university elections took place at FH Aachen from May 18 to 22. Following the counting of all ballots, a look at the data reveals both a high level of dynamism in individual faculties and interesting trends compared to around 10 years ago.

The Voter Turnout Ranking: Who voted the most?

When looking at the percentage of voter turnout this year, a familiar but extremely strong frontrunner emerged: Faculty 1 (Architecture) recorded a turnout of 34.1%, placing itself unchallenged at the top of the entire university.

A look at the archives shows that Architecture has absolutely solidified its role as a stronghold of student democracy: In the 2017 elections, Faculty 1 already took the crown with a strong 31.9%. This year, that turnout was even topped. In stark contrast, Faculty 5 (Electrical Engineering and Information Technology) recorded a turnout of only 8%.

Good to know: The fact that smaller units, such as Faculty 4 (Design), naturally show lower figures in terms of absolute vote numbers is simply due to the significantly lower number of eligible voters there. Percentage-wise, however, the turnout among the design students absolutely held its own in comparison to the larger faculties.

The downward outlier: Room for improvement in Jülich!
Where there is bright light, there is, as we know, also some shadow. This time, the most extreme contrast to the Aachen frontrunner came from the external campus: In the election for the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering and Technomathematics, voter turnout was a mere 5.6%. Out of a total of 1,305 eligible voters, only 73 ballots ultimately found their way into the box.

For comparison: In the 2017 elections, turnout for Faculty 9 was already at a very modest level at 6.4%, but has unfortunately adjusted even further downward. We think: You can definitely do better next time!

A big thank you to everyone who used their vote!
