A Day in the Life of a Student -
Sustainably Through University Life

The summer semester has begun, and campus life is back in full swing. Often, there isn't much time left to think about topics unrelated to lectures and labs. Or is there? In the following text, we've included a few tips on how you can make sustainable decisions amidst the daily chaos, without too much effort.

Morning – 7:30 AM
Your alarm goes off. Snooze. Again. Snooze. Once more! Grumbling, you get up because the math professor starts the lecture promptly at 8:15 AM, whether you're there or not. Wait, 8:15 AM? That's in just twenty minutes! Hastily, you throw on some pants and a T-shirt, grab your backpack, and quickly snag your stainless steel water bottle and your lunchbox from the kitchen. There's no time for a full breakfast; a sandwich from the nearest bakery will have to do. Halfway to campus, you realize you left your thermos cup for coffee at home. Darn!

Mid-morning – 10:30 AM
Phew, math is finally over, but your stomach is still empty. It’s too early for lunch at the cafeteria, but luckily the bakery isn’t far away. As you arrive, the aroma of freshly ground coffee hits you. If only you hadn’t forgotten your cup! But then your eyes land on the counter: a few turquoise containers with the logo “RECUP” printed on them. Reusable coffee cups with a deposit are exactly what you need right now! You order a cappuccino in a RECUP and have your favorite sandwich packed into your lunchbox.

Midday – 11:45 AM
Break’s over, time for the next lecture. The professor only uploads her slides sporadically, so you’d better take notes. You’ve gotten used to typing key points on your laptop, but formulas are still easier to scribble down on paper. To use as little fresh paper as possible, you rely on old receipts and misprints as scrap paper.

Afternoon – 4:30 PM
On your way home, you pass by another bakery, return your empty Recup cup, and get your €1 deposit back. You use it to unlock a shopping cart at the supermarket, where you pick up groceries for dinner with your flatmates. Luckily, you always carry a cloth bag in your backpack, perfect for carrying everything back home.

Evening – 6:00 PM
As you walk through the door, your flatmate is waiting for you. He asks if you could help him pick up a small dresser he found at a great price on eBay Classifieds. You wonder how exactly he plans to transport the dresser—neither of you owns a car. He tells you that during his last move, he registered with a car-sharing company, and you can simply rent a car for a short period.

Night – 11:00 PM
Helping your flatmate, cooking dinner, reviewing math—everything done! Even though it’s been a long day, you wisely pack your water bottle, lunch box, and thermos into your backpack for tomorrow. Because the fun starts all over again in the morning.
