The work of a freshman tutor - Why you should become a freshman tutor!

New winter semester, new orientation week! Orientation week, also known as orientation days, was probably more eventful for some and perhaps a little quieter for others. What can definitely be said is that every year, the orientation tutors put a lot of effort into getting the most out of the week. But what exactly does an orientation tutor do?

As a first-year tutor, you have a very wide range of tasks. The first thing on the agenda for the semester is, of course, the first-year week. You will certainly have experienced some of the points mentioned in this article during your first-year week, but perhaps not all of them. This is because not all departments organize the first-year week in the same way; there may always be slight differences.

Most of you probably took part in the traditional FH tour during orientation week. Tutors take it upon themselves to show new students around the FH, help them find their way around, show them the different rooms, and explain how to register for exams. All Jülich students also get a tour of the laboratory.
In addition to the FH tour, some tutors also organize an FH rally. The aim here is to give first-year students a playful introduction to the FH so that they can get to know it better. There are various stations with games that are planned and run by the tutors themselves.
To satisfy the rally hype, the tutors plan an annual city rally through Aachen or Jülich, which is similar to the FH Rally and includes games. This allows freshmen to get to know the city a little better. Since most of you have probably participated in the rally, you can probably imagine how much work and planning, but also how much fun, goes into it!

For those who still have too much energy left in the evening, tutors organize parties at Nox, Apollo, or Lessie Fair, depending on which department you belong to. Of course, non-partygoers must also be considered, which is why tutors usually plan bar or pub crawls.

After a short break, one month later it's time for the first semester orientation seminar (EES), also known as the Erstifahrt!
Approximately 150 freshmen and 50 tutors travel together to the Gerolstein Youth Hostel. Part of the time is spent getting to know the university committees better. The rest of the time is spent getting to know fellow students and tutors better. The entire program is planned by the tutors and designed to be as varied as possible so that there is something for everyone!
