Presumably, some of you have already used AI tools like ChatGPT as part of your studies. Whether it's for structuring a research paper or supplementing code, the question always arises: Is it allowed/legal?
A recently presented legal opinion* provides a clear answer: Software cannot claim authorship of the content created, but students can. However, it is crucial that a significant intellectual contribution is made by the student. To what extent this is the case must be decided on a case-by-case basis, and the opinion does not provide definitive statements on this matter. Typically, students already have to sign declarations of independence for their work, where they can list the tools used and how they were employed.
The experts compare the introduction of AI tools to the advent of calculators, as calculators have become integrated into learning and examination methods over time. The same should happen with AI tools, and assessment criteria should be adjusted accordingly
The question of when and how a clarification regarding the integration of these tools into the respective regulations will occur remains open. The team of experts is actively working on this issue in the coming months to provide meaningful recommendations for universities.
