Scotland became the first government to pass a law in 2020 stating that free menstrual products must be made available in public facilities. Since then, many cities, schools, and universities in Germany have followed suit, offering tampons and pads in their restrooms. This winter semester, FH Aachen will also launch a pilot project for this purpose.
How is the project being implemented at FH Aachen?
For the pilot project, four product dispensers will be installed in four different restrooms on the Jülich campus. Students and staff who menstruate are allowed to use the products as needed. To ensure that as many people as possible can take advantage of this offering, we ask that you only take as many menstrual products as you need. The project is being developed in cooperation with several parties, including both the university and student representation. The rectorate will cover the costs of the pilot project, while the Prorectorate for Diversity and Equal Opportunities will create a website to provide information about the project. The AStA is responsible for the implementation as the main organizer, and the Jülich student council will handle the refilling of the dispensers.
Why are free menstrual products important?
Many people know it, and most dread it: the unexpected onset of menstruation. At home, it can be annoying, but it's usually not a big deal. In public, such as at university, the situation can quickly become uncomfortable if you don’t have a tampon or pad on hand. Free menstrual products at the university are meant to help in such emergencies—not just physically, but also mentally. The concern about the irregular onset of menstruation should be alleviated.
At the same time, we want to help destigmatize the topic. For many, menstruation is still associated with shame and is not considered part of public discourse. As AStA, we find it outdated to remain silent about an issue that affects about half of all people. Last but not least, the offer is intended to benefit those students for whom the monthly expenses for menstrual products represent a financial burden.
How can one support the project?
To assess how the project is received and how high the demand for hygiene products is in practice, we are conducting a survey. There, you will also have the opportunity to provide feedback and suggestions for improvement. The survey is an important indicator for us in future negotiations about the project's future—so it’s crucial that as many people as possible participate. Even if you do not study at the Jülich campus but find the provision of free menstrual products generally worthwhile, we would greatly appreciate your participation!
On the dispensers and on the website about the topic, you will find the link to the survey.
